SSM Public School grew out of a civic-service organisation's mission to bring quality education to T.R. Nagar — and today it's a CBSE-affiliated school supported by PES University.
Our Story
A library and reading room that became a school
The Samaja Seva Mandali was established in 1958 by Prof. M.R. Doreswamy to promote civic amenities in T.R. Nagar. It began with a library, a free reading room, and a craft centre for women.
The locality was lacking educational facilities — which prompted Dr. M.R. Doreswamy and a few other renowned educationists, including the late Prof. M.V. Krishna Rao, to start an educational institution with the noble objective of reaching quality education to the middle and lower-middle-class children of the society.
SSM Nursery School opened in a 14-square building in 1967 at Thyagarajanagar near Sai Mandir, N.R. Colony, with 14 students. Primary school followed in 1968, in both English and Kannada medium. As demand grew, the school moved into a proper building — inaugurated by the then Governor of Karnataka, His Excellency Sri G.S. Pathak.
To meet continuing demand, SSM acquired a CA site from the BDA at Chennama Tank Bed, where a 5,000 sq.ft. school building was inaugurated by then-Governor Sri P. Venkata Subbaiah in 1988. A new block was added in 2009 to accommodate growing student strength. Today, with a strong faculty, SSM has about 1,300 students across Nursery to Std X.
